The Do's and Don'ts of Cleaning Your Snowmobile Helmet

After taking many rides on your snowmobile, there's a good chance that your helmet needs cleaning. You don't want your helmet to look or smell so bad that it makes your buddies keep their distance, so perform some helmet maintenance. If you need tips on completing this task, read below to learn the do's and don'ts of cleaning your snowmobile helmet.

Do Clean the Interior and Exterior

Start by cleaning your helmet's interior and exterior. It is best to do the interior with a special foam cleaner for the liners or any soft material that touches your head.

Afterward, you can work on the exterior with mild soap and a washcloth. Use a gentle soap or special visor cleaner to take care of the face shield and remove the dust and grime it has gathered over your adventures.

Don't Use an Abrasive Cloth on the Visor

If you’re using a cloth to clean your helmet's visor, make sure that it is not abrasive. It can scratch up the shield and make it hard for you to see, and your snowmobiling trips will be dangerous. Avoid using paper towels since they can also scratch the visor.

Do Dry the Helmet Thoroughly

Do your best to dry the interior thoroughly before letting it air dry. Try wiping it as much as you can with a cloth or towel. You can speed things up by setting a fan in the helmet's direction or putting a towel inside to soak up the moisture.

Don't Wash It Right Before Using It

One of the biggest "don'ts" of cleaning your snowmobile helmet is washing it on a day when you’ll go snowmobiling. Your helmet will take a long time to dry after cleaning it, and it won't dry quickly enough for you to use safely. A damp helmet will make your head cold, which could affect your health. Clean your helmet after a trip or in the off-season, when you have plenty of time to let it sit for a while.
